Message from President, MERCY Malaysia
MERCY Malaysia is pleased to invite colleagues and partners from organisations devoted to improving humanitarianism and the broader international community in the Asian region, to participate and contribute to the International Humanitarian Conference (IHC) in Kuala Lumpur from 28th to 30th November 2013.

The overall theme of the conference is “Sustaining Humanitarian Efforts, Over the Long Haul”, a reflection of the many challenges and opportunities which most, if not all, of us are facing and our key role as humanitarian and development agencies in the global South. The conference will be organised to discuss and debate experiences, practices and solutions to the key issues confronting those least able to manage with the effects of natural disasters and conflicts within the region and those who provide assistance and support to those affected and vulnerable communities.

Within the regional civil society sector, we need to challenge those of us working in the humanitarian sector to examine our effectiveness in securing real improvements in the lives of the marginalised communities we serve. MERCY Malaysia believes our sector needs to be increasingly open and accountable to engage in critical debates about the effectiveness of our practices and about future direction. As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2015 milestones draw closer and the future agendas are being defined: the IHC 2013 provides a regional platform to shape our collective thoughts and responses on the major issues faced by humanitarian organisations and our associated partners and regional networks.

The International Humanitarian Conference is designed to contribute and reflect on ‘southern’ humanitarian action, campaigns and partnerships, and the evidence they provide in helping to define new or modified regional and national agendas. We need to examine the research and evidence that inform the construction of humanitarian and development frameworks beyond 2015, set within an analysis of changing ‘global south’ imperatives and new spaces to help shape increased regional cooperation and research.

MERCY Malaysia invites both humanitarian participants and supporting sponsors to contribute its specialised themes, which include: partnership and collaboration in emergencies, psychological first aid, post-conflict community resilience, security and civil and military coordination and fundraising strategies or NGOs.

We welcome early registration from both individuals and organisations to seize this unique opportunity to explore new knowledge, practices and networking opportunities.

With best regards,
Dato' Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus
President Of MERCY Malaysia
